Why do I have so many thoughts about Gossip Girl?

So I really liked the Gossip Girl finale? WTF not expecting that. Maybe it was because I was already spoiled for a lot of it? But they got me with all the drama and the previous season call backs and the pilot references. I'M EASY OK?

Seriously I get why people are mad about the finale. I'm personally not all that concerned RE: Blair/Chuck. I cannot grasp how people are more upset about him sleeping with Jenny than they are about him pimping her out to Uncle Rape-a-lot. Chuck sleeps with everyone. Chuck was partying with hookers and blow like the very episode before.

Although I do love that Blair's line in the sand was sleeping with Jenny Humphrey. She's totally fine with him going on an opium bender and sleeping with every prostitute and cirque du soleil member in the city. But JENNY CORPSE BRIDE HUMPHREY? Fuck no. We're through. I actually really follow Blair's logic there. I wouldn't want to get anywhere near the rat's nest on top of Jenny's head, even if only secondhand.

Blair and Chuck will be fine. Not for awhile but eventually. They're the WHOLE SHOW. I've stopped worrying about them as a couple. They'll always find each other in the end. They are the only two people of equal awesome and evil.

I'm more worried, honestly, about my lovely shiny happy people AKA Serena and Nate. I'm encouraged that Blair referred to them as "mythic" because really...they are. No two people on that show are as simple and pretty and happy as they are. They just bounce around, doing stupid things and ruining everyone's life by complete accident and it's wonderful. I NEED MORE SERENA/NATE. I'm not willing to let go of them yet! I'm sincerely worried about them. They light up my life.

With that said? It was actually sort of nice to see Serena/Dan again. Don't get me wrong, I do NOT want that to happen again. It looks like it is and I am not on board. BUT with that said? It felt like Dan was more likable in this episode than he's been all season (except for in scenes with Blair) and more relevant too. I'm 1000% team dumb golden retrievers but I won't mind getting more Serena/Dan interaction. And I buy that after all the stuff with her dad she would fall back into the Serena/Dan blackhole briefly. He was her first love. But I'm hoping the show doesn't forget Serena/Nate. Seriously. They are SO DEAR.

I actually felt really terrible for Jenny. I don't actually hate her like a lot of people do. (Unlike Vanessa, who serves no purpose on the show other than annoying me and being Dan, but so much creepier.) Jenny is there for hilarious drama (like remember that time she was a drug dealer!? Or when Agnes SLOWLY burned her clothes after the ~guerrilla fashion show~?) and I appreciate that. By the end of the episode she had blown up every major relationship on the show. It might be annoying but it is impressive.

And her downward spiral has been really well developed over the season. I came up with this theory about Jenny awhile back because I was trying to figure out what was her thing. Like Blair is all about control and Vanessa is all about stalking and Chuck is all about the burlesque which makes him perfect for Blair because she's always staging these movies in her head. And I could probably write an essay about Serena but my thoughts have been pretty scattered on her lately so I'll spare everyone.

I figured out that Jenny's thing is that she always wants the thing that she can't have. If you put something up on a shelf and tell Jenny she can't have it she will rappel up by her disgusting extensions to get it. She wants to be Queen but not just in time, NOW so she disposes Blair to do it. She wants to get into fashion so she gets an internship with Eleanor. But that's not good enough so she has to QUIT SCHOOL because this is the only time in her life she'll get a chance! And then she's not content in just working for Eleanor, she has to be in meetings! Then she starts her own clothing line! And this season she's finally gotten everything she ever thought she wanted. So no wonder she went crazy and started dealing drugs and trying to get Nate away from Serena. She had nothing left to WANT. My guess is if she got Nate that relationship would have lasted for two seconds. It's not Nate she actually wants, it's just the thing she can't have.

Without something to strive for this season she's just gone increasingly nutsballs until it finally spiraled into sleeping with Chuck, which is the universally recognized symbol that you've hit rock bottom on this show. I actually felt terrible for her the whole episode, despite all her problems being of her own making. And when she was crying with all her zombie eye makeup smudged all over her face: ouch. Taylor Momsen might seem like the most pretentious teenager ever in real life but girl can ACT.

All the callbacks to the first season were also surprisingly well done. Georgina at Grand Central, Jenny looking out the window, Chuck/Jenny and face punching, Nate getting shut down by Serena, Blair not showing up for Chuck instead of vice versa, and the two girls taking off together. Blair's outfit here even mirrored her s1 finale outfit. And the green coat was obviously supposed to remind us of the green coat she wore in the s2 finale.

I was so happy to see Serena and Blair ride off together into the sunset on a romantic trip to Paris. They are, were and always will be the true OTP of the show. And I love the idea of them both single at the same time. It really gets me excited for the Paris episodes next season. There is little I want to see more than Blair and Serena unleashing their unique brand of destruction on Paris. I'm betting that by the second day Blair will be crowned some kind of royalty and Serena will have accidentally knocked down the Eiffel Tower.

So just posting up the comments I left on the NYMag reality index. Here's hoping I make the recap of the recap again this week! That would make three for three!

-50 for everyone going on and on about how "romantic" Chuck's Affair to Remember ultimatum is. I buy that Chuck would think this was the most romantic thing he'd ever done since just not date raping people is romantic for Chuck but wouldn't anyone else notice this was horrible? I mean Chuck was really going to propose in front of TOURISTS?

+20 for Serena being able to pack up for Paris in approximately three minutes. All her clothes are only about a yard of fabric, so I'm assuming she could get about half her wardrobe in one suitcase.

-100 for the gross Chuck/Jenny hookup and minus an additional 50 for Blair not immediately knowing something was up when she popped over. You know if this was real Chuck would have been covered in dead weave and zombie eye makeup.

+20 for Jenny's evil voodoo powers managing to (almost) successfully blow up every major couple on this show.

The more evil Jenny got the more tendril-like her Medusa hair became. By the end of the episode it looked like her hair was performing these acts of bitchery independent of her. IT'S ALIVE. And it has a plan! Plus 50.

+100 for the Humphrey hug and the look of absolute horror on Lily and Eric's faces when they're asked to join in. In that moment I like to believe Lily started reevaluating her life choices. Fake cancer in Palm Beach not looking so bad now huh?

+30 for Georgina being 20 months pregnant. That baby bump was HUGE but then it would have to be to accommodate all the ego and craziness. I can only imagine the terrifying poems baby Dangina will someday write.

I might do a finale picspam soon with all the comparisons to other seasons/the pilot. Also I realize this post is completely ridiculous. Sometimes I think lots of thoughts about Gossip Girl! I can't help it!

XOXO

That was my exact feeling! And I watched the last 6 over the weekend (I was behind) and was spoiled for them, too, which also made things better. Maybe this is one of those rare shows where spoilers are good?

I cannot grasp how people are more upset about him sleeping with Jenny than they are about him pimping her out to Uncle Rape-a-lot.

YES. I get why BLAIR'S upset, but as a viewer? It's Chuck. I'd be mad at maybe every other character on tv if they immediately slept with someone else immediately after thinking the love of their life gave up on them, but Chuck? Of course that's what he did!

And, yeah, what you said about not being worried about Chuck/Blair long term. They're it for each other and I think they know it. That doesn't mean Blair is (or maybe even should) forgive him anytime soon, but she knows he's ~the one.~

I figured out that Jenny's thing is that she always wants the thing that she can't have.

I can see this. And I've been working on a theory for why the audience doesn't like her and I think it's because she doesn't really have anyone to love her. Haha, which I know sounds all kind of melodramatic, but when Blair does evil stuff, it doesn't really matter because Chuck, Serena and even Nate are going to love her no matter what. Jenny doesn't really have that. She and Dan don't have much of a relationship these days. And I feel like Eric could be that character for her, but he's not around enough. So when Jenny does evil things, everyone on the show hates her and there isn't that person who says, "It was wrong, but I love you anyway" and makes the audience see in her in a better light.

And I found myself weirdly shipping Dan/Serena. I've never been a huge fan of them and I'd like to see Nate/Serena done well, but here? It really was kind of nice.

I'm honestly starting to believe that. Because had that Jenny/Chuck thing hit me out of nowhere I think I would still be WTFing. But since I saw that UK promo I had like a whole week to go through the stages of grief and come to a place where it sort of made sense, even though it made me want to kill the writers.

I'd be mad at maybe every other character on tv if they immediately slept with someone else immediately after thinking the love of their life gave up on them, but Chuck? Of course that's what he did!

Exactly! Five seconds after they broke up he was always picking up girls ten feet taller than him and doing blow. What do people expect? I still think "pimped out to rapey uncle" is so much worse in the grand scheme of things than sleeping with yet ANOTHER girl.

They're it for each other and I think they know it. That doesn't mean Blair is (or maybe even should) forgive him anytime soon, but she knows he's ~the one.~

Yup. The show really has itself in a corner as far as they're concerned because they can't really partner swap like they can with everyone else. Chuck and Blair are too perfect for each other (and too evil) to really be with anyone else. <3

And I've been working on a theory for why the audience doesn't like her and I think it's because she doesn't really have anyone to love her.

I think you're actually dead on there. Because no matter what kind of crazy shit Blair pulls, we have people going "well ok, but we' understand Blair's various mental things that lead to this terrible thing she did". Whereas Jenny (as you said) really only has Rufus, who is the worst parent in the world. If Eric was a more consistent prescene on the show I think it would be easier to emphasize with her.

Yea I agree about the Dan/Serena being well done. It's sort of like how the Nate/Blair resurgence started out in s2. I liked how the introduced it (although the actual relationship was horrible) and it made sense in context. When you're at the bottom it makes sense to go back to your first love. I hope we get more Nate/Serena next season though. I adore them.
